READ ME PART 1: Meditation, mindfulness & endometriosis
And its for good reason. With the busy stressful lives we live we’ve never needed it as much.
Yes you’ve probably heard of it but what exactly is it and how could it potentially help me with my endometriosis?
Meditation in a nutshell is essentially exercise for the brain.
Through meditation, we can build up areas of our brain and actually rewire it to enhance positive traits like focus and decision-making and diminish less positive ones like fear and stress.
Meditation has been around for years but it’s only recently that it has become really popular and more and more research has been going into it.
There are lots of proven benefits to meditation such as having a positive impact on things like:
· Compassion and even more importantly self compassion which is so important for women with endometriosis
· And there is also more and more research to show it can positively impact on things like anxiety and depression which can also be implicated in endometriosis.
But why is meditation and mindfulness especifically important for women with endometriosis?
Just by having endometriosis means that we higher cortisol levels which we know aren’t good for our overall health or condition.
So managing stress and finding effective ways in order to do this are really important which is where the beauty of meditation and mindfulness come in.
Hang on a minute….what’s mindfulness…is that a different thing altogether?
Meditation is essentially an umbrella term that encompasses the practice of reaching ultimate consciousness and concentration, to acknowledge the mind and in a way to self regulate it.
Whereas mindfulness is essentially part of meditation.
It is the art of being in the present, such as focusing completely on drinking a hot cup of tea or taking in a scent of your favourite perfume.
So the beauty of mindfulness is there are probably lots of activities you are doing right now that you can do more mindfully as a way of meditating.
